Tip 1
Just before putting your boots on, put on a clean, thin, wool
sock, never cotton; make sure it is long enough to reach your
calf. Preferably use a new Summit II sock. Make sure you always
change your socks at lunch, again using a clean, dry, wool sock.
Your feet perspire one cup of water in an average eight-hour
day at the office, imagine how much more they perspire while
skiing. Some people find wool ichy, but Murino wool has a very
soft no ichy feel. It is the only fibre that keeps you warm
even when it’s wet and absorbs many times it weight. Dry
feet are warmer feet.

2
Make sure your boots fit properly and are not cutting
off circulation. A ski orthotic or footbed is a must as
it aligns the foot within the boot, promoting better circulation.
If you’re not sure about the fit of your boots,
call us at Skiis & Biikes and set up an appointment
for a free consultation with one of our professional boot
fitters.

Tip
3
Wash out your entire boot liner with warm water, no soap,
twice a season. Allow a couple of days for it to dry before
skiing again. This gets the salt from your sweat out of
the liner. The salt plugs up the foam of the liner making
it less lofty and not as warm. Salt in the liner also
makes your feet sweat more, making your feet cold and
clammy. Always make sure your boots are dry before putting
them on. At Skiis & Biikes, you can get a boot dryer
($99.99) that will dry your boots in a couple of hours.
They make great gifts for friends or family.

Tip
4 & 5
Never put anything in your boot except your foot and your wool
sock. Your long underwear should be folded back above the top
of your boot.
When you fold your long underwear above your boot, a pocket
is created, put a hand-warmer on the inside of the shin in this
pocket. This will help heat the blood trying to get to your
toes without interfering with your boot fit or boot performance.
Hand and toe warmers need air to work and sometimes if you put
them on your toes in the boot, they don’t get enough air
and don’t do any good. Also, when you put them in your
boots, you run the risk of screwing up your boot fit and restricting
blood that would normally keep your feet warmer.

Tip
6
You loose most of your heat through the top of your spine. People
believe that you lose 80% of your body heat through your head,
when-in fact it is through the top of your spine at the base
of your skull. Right now put your hand on the top of your head
then the top of your spine, and feel the temperature difference.
The top of the spine is a difficult place to cover and I have
found that an insulated hood is the only thing that fits the
bill. If you are wearing a helmet or hat and your feet start
to get cold, simply pull your hood up and within twenty minutes
your feet should start to warm up. For people that suffer from
cold feet, make sure you get a ski jacket with an insulated
hood. The professional staff at Skiis & Biikes can help
you find the right style and fit.

Tip
7
A mammalian dive reflex occurs when your sinus area gets below
22 degrees Celsius, as a result your body slows the circulation
to your extremities keeping it for your body core. A cold face
equals cold feet. Good goggles will keep your sinus area warm
and the circulation working properly. On really cold days add
a mask it will help too. |

Tip
8
What you eat affects your warm feet! Eat lots of fruit and drink
lots of water, try to stay away from junk food, alcohol, caffeine
and smoking, these all contribute to screwing up your circulation
and making your feet cold. During warm-up breaks, have soup
instead of hot chocolate or coffee.

Sometimes you can do everything correct and still
experience cold feet. At a last resort, at Skiis & Biikes
we have electric boot heaters ($220) that can be installed in
your boots and will warm your feet allowing you stay out on
the slopes longer. Boot heaters make a great gift for your partner
who has to stop to warm up more often than you would like.
< Wireless Thericontrol Boot Climate System avaiable
at all three locations. |
