Selecting the Right Saddle

Selecting the Right Saddle

Just like choosing an office chair, your bike saddle needs to be comfortable and ergonomic whether you are commuting or riding from Toronto to Niagara. Here are some tips and tricks on picking the right saddle.

Selecting the Right Saddle

Choosing the right saddle is imperative to achieving a proper bike fit. If you’re spending serious time in the saddle, there is no reason to suffer the pain and discomfort caused by a saddle that doesn't mirror your anatomy. Being the primary point of contact between the body and the bike, the slightest adjustment to the saddle will affect your position on the pedals and the handlebar. It’s also important to remember that males and females have different saddle requirements and a gender specific design is key.

Choosing the right Saddle

The selection process can be broken down into three steps:

Riding posture: Posture determines where the pelvis makes contact with the seat. Less aggressive posture means more pressure on the rear of the saddle while a more aggressive posture means pressure farther forward. Once we determine riding posture, we can narrow down seat options suited to your riding style.

Trim level: Comfort comes from even pressure distribution over the entirety of the saddle. Our goal is to determine your ideal balance of padding placement, shell material and rail construction, all of which effect on pressure distribution and ultimately comfort.

Saddle width: Each individual has uniquely sized sit bones, and once you know the size of your sit bones, we can fit you with an appropriately sized saddle. This is something our bike fitters can measure.
