Edging is an important skill for skiing as with out it no one could change direction. Edging is defined as the ability to roll or tip the ski onto it’s metal side cut that essentially holds and serves to deflect us where we want to go. The amount we edge can and does vary depending on skill level and the speed were travelling.
Edging can put a great deal of strain on the individuals body as both the gravitational and centrifugal forces are constantly pulling against them.
The stiffness in the boot materials, the rigidity of connection between the shell and cuff and the relationship of angles between the shell, cuff and the skiers joints are a crucial during the edging phase. For the expert skier, the combination should provide a direct link to the edge with sufficient lateral stiffness to support the higher forces. For a recreational skier, it must remain supple and easy for the user to manage at lower speeds. |
