During this phase the skis encounter the least resistance and will move faster relative to the body. Based on pitch and snow conditions a carving skier will have make adjustments to stay in fore/aft balance relative to the changing speed of the feet through the arc. These adjustments include:
To summarize:
carving = edge, pressure, steer, which is facilitated by
1) placing the COM inside the feet/ arc, and then
2) adjusting the relative speed of the segments – COM and feet – to stay in balance.
1) Reducing the speed of the feet relative to the body by
a. Reducing pressure – relaxing the legs
b. Steering/pivoting to increase friction
c. Using terrain (moguls, soft snow) to increase friction
2) Projecting the body ahead of the feet – “free falling” – at the beginning of the turn, then allowing the feet to catch up through the fall line. |
