Why would the average cyclist want to undergo a proper bike fitting?

Because they can ride longer, farther, faster without any pain.  They can do it without damaging their body, without damaging their hips or knees or ankles.  It’s just more comfortable. When you get to the end of your 100k ride, you hurt because of fatigue, not a painful seat, or handlebars being too low.  It just makes the biking experience a more enjoyable thing.  You fatigue nicely, so at the end of the ride you feel like you had a nice workout, not like you can’t get out of bed the next morning.


In your opinion, how important is it to have a bike fit done? Can’t somebody just set it up how they think it feels best?

Very important, if you will be using your bicycle regularly. If you set it up yourself, you’re going to make your body fit the bike, in the long term this will cause discomfort and you may even injure yourself. Instead, it’s the bike that should adjusted to fit your body. When you’re bike doesn’t fit properly you’re likely to put strain on your joints; your knees, neck, and lower back.  Not to mention that you’ll have a better experience overall, and you’ll be able to pedal for longer, in a comfortable position when your bike is fitted properly.

What can you tell us about saddle fitting and how it affects performance?

Generally, most bikes come with too narrow of saddles, and you’re not positioned on your sit bones. For guys and gals this is always an issue.  Lycra shorts as well, people always think they’re to go fast, but it’s about support, cushion and comfort.  The sliding of the lycra on the saddle increases comfort dramatically.  You wouldn’t play hockey without a jock, it’s the same with riding.

What are some adjustments cyclists can make on their own?

You could get bike shoes to help your rider more efficiently.  You could also check your seat post height. To simplify, when sitting on the saddle, you should be on your tippy toes when at a complete stop.


What are some signs of an ill fitting bike?

Chronic back pain, chronic neck pain, numb hands and numb feet.  Those are four of the  biggest complaints that we get from people riding ill fitting bikes.

What are some signs of an ill fitting bike?

Moving/shifting around on the saddle, excess movement in hips are all signs there may be issues with saddle selection, seating position or both. Tightness in neck and/or shoulders is a sign we have an issue with handlebar selection and/or reach. Pain on top of knee or behind the knee are signs your saddle may be too high or too low.


What are your biking essentials, those things you never leave home without?
I never leave home without a spare tube, a patch kit, CO2, and a multi tool.

What would you say to people who have a hard time know when to bring their bikes into the shop, and when to try fixing it themselves.

In this age that we live in, it's very easy to figure out what’s wrong with your bike. Even as mechanics, we are constantly learning and evolving, finding information online, and learning on the job. Look on YouTube, watch some videos, and give it a try. If you’re really out of your element, then bring it to us at the shop.
